Annie Dookhan: Chemist Arrested for Alleged Involvement in Drug Lab Scandal

Annie Dookhan, a chemist that is alleged to be involved in a recent scandal at a state drug lab, has been arrested and faces charges of obstructing justice and making false claims of having a degree on her resume. The scandal erupted after it was discovered that thousands of evidence samples may have been tampered with or tainted.

The drug lab scandal has caused a lot of controversy, mainly because thousands of convictions risk being overturned due to the fact that key evidence has been compromised. Due to the ongoing investigation into the drug lab scandal, there are several inmates who have now had their sentences suspended.

It is alleged that over the course of nine years, Dookhan may have tampered with evidence during the course of her employment at a state drug lab located in Jamaica Plain.

Dookhan seems to have admitted her involvement in the case, telling investigators that she “messed up” and that the evidence tampering was her fault. As the investigation is still ongoing and new evidence could be uncovered in the future, it is possible that Dookhan will face additional charges.

After Dookhan's arrest, a press conference has been held on Friday afternoon, during with Attorney General Martha Coakley stated that Dookhan's actions had a serious negative effect on the state's criminal justice system. Coakley sought to reassure the public that all those who are responsible for the scandal will be held accountable and that past mistakes will not be repeated in the future.

According to Coakley, it is currently believed that the tampering only took place at one specific drug lab and was conducted by Dookhan without involvement of anybody else. Even with that in mind, such a serious breach at a state drug lab may have repercussions on the entire state justice system. Attorney General Coakley has reaffirmed her commitment to regaining the public's trust with regards to the state's criminal justice system.
